Dear Minister
Cannon,
I have become
aware of WestPac LNG Corporation's proposal to build a Liquid Natural Gas
importing facility on Texada Island, along with a gas-fired electrical
generation station producing from 600 to 1200 MWs. I am very concerned about this proposal and I am writing to you
to voice my opposition.
The proposal has
950 ft. LNG Tankers transiting the Straits of Juan de Fuca and Georgia
approximately every 10 days. In the US stringent no-go zones are enforced
around LNG tankers because of their size, handing characteristics and hazardous
cargo. All marine and air traffic along the route is suspended during the
tanker's passage (which in this case would involve 6 different ferry routes as
well as several international airports and military airfields). Given the
potential for a containment loss, when flammable LNG is released, what
provisions will the Government of Canada have in place to handle the security
and safety issues that these tankers will present?
Citing safety and
environmental concerns, the Canadian Government played a leadership role in
opposing the traffic of LNG tankers in New Brunswick waters to a project in the
state of Maine. We should be even more concerned that an LNG import facility is
being considered for the very beautiful and unique Gulf Island waters. I call
upon you as Minister of the Transport to vigorously oppose WestPac's proposal.
The Government of Canada should do everything in its power to stop this project
now.
What is your
position on this proposal?
Yours truly,
