Dear Minister
Baird,
I have become
aware of WestPac LNG Corporation's proposal to build a Liquid Natural Gas
importing facility on Texada Island, BC along with a gas-fired electrical
generation station producing from 600 to 1200 MWs. I am very concerned about this proposal and I am writing to you
to voice my opposition.
As we are dealing
with the serious consequences of global warming, the Government of Canada
should express its concern about the construction of a power plant that could
become the largest CO2 emitter in British Columbia. If you believe this is a
provincial matter, I must draw you attention to the fact that the LNG is to be
transported by tankers through the Straits of Juan de Fuca and Georgia
approximately once every 10 days. The impact of these huge LNG tankers on the
marine environment and the new Gulf Islands National Park make this proposal a
concern to your Department.
Citing safety and
environmental concerns, the Canadian Government played a leadership role in
opposing the traffic of LNG tankers in New Brunswick waters to a project in the
state of Maine. As BC exports most of it’s natural gas, the very beautiful and
unique Gulf Islands waters of Canada would bear the consequences of any
accidents while the primary market of the imports would be the United States. I
call upon you as Minister of the Environment to vigorously oppose WestPac's
proposal. The Government of Canada should do everything in its power to stop
this project now.
What is your
position on this proposal?
Yours truly,
