Dear Minister
Penner,
I have become
aware of WestPac LNG Corporation's proposal to build a Liquid Natural Gas
importing facility on Texada Island, along with a gas-fired electrical
generation station producing from 600 to 1200 MWs. I am very concerned about this proposal and I am writing to you
to voice my opposition.
Because of the
serious consequences of global warming, the Government of BC has committed to
reduced Green House Gas emissions by over 30%. How could you not express
concern about the construction of a power plant that could become the largest
CO2 emitter in British Columbia? In addition, the LNG is to be transported by
tankers through the Straits of Juan de Fuca and Georgia approximately every 10
days. The impact of these huge LNG tankers on the marine environment must be a
very serious concern. Several local government bodies have already called for
an LNG tanker ban.
The B.C.
Government played a leadership role in opposing the Sumass Energy II project in
northern Washington State. I call upon you as Minister of the Environment to
vigorously oppose WestPac's proposal. The Provincial Government should do
everything in its power to stop this project now.
What is your
position on this proposal listed with the BC Major Projects Inventory List and
updated as recently as March 2008?
Yours truly,
