Dear Minister
Neufeld,
I have become
aware of WestPac LNG Corporation's proposal to build a Liquid Natural Gas
importing facility on Texada Island, along with a gas-fired electrical
generation station producing from 600 to 1200 MWs. I am very concerned about this proposal and I am writing to you
to voice my opposition.
The proposal will
see imported LNG coming into the constricted Gulf Island waters affecting
existing shipping and industries to bring in LNG when B.C currently exports 80%
of its natural gas. There is no need for this fuel in British Columbia, and we
will merely be a transhipment facility in route to markets in the US, where it
will compete with BC natural gas. This project does not make economic sense.
Will the NAFTA
proportionality clause jeopardize access to our own reserves if natural gas
exports increase due to imported LNG?
I call upon you as
Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources to vigorously oppose
WestPac's proposal. The Government of British Columbia should do everything in
its power to stop this proposal now.
What is your
position on this proposal listed with the BC Major Projects Inventory List and
updated as recently as March 2008?
Yours truly,
